Position Summary:

The Director I Software Engineering will build and manage highly motivated, high-performing software engineering teams to support various business and technology areas. Key responsibilities include hiring, mentoring, and motivating staff, driving budgeting, and planning, and collaborating with product managers to estimate effort, prioritize the roadmap, and deliver high-quality applications. The role involves designing robust, modular, and scalable systems, leading teams hands-on to implement new features, and ensuring systems are secure, compliant, and up to date. The director will monitor key performance metrics, make data-driven decisions to optimize operations, and identify opportunities for system and process improvements. They will leverage CI/CD and process optimization to improve time to market, stay current with industry trends, and drive the adoption of best practices. Additionally, the director will assist in developing the technical vision, strategy, and innovation for Mercury’s application systems and communicate with executive leadership to represent the engineering organization and its vision.

$123,809 to $322,586 (CA, NJ, NY, WA, HI, AK, MD, CT, RI, MA)

$123,809 to $322,596 (NV, OR, AZ, CO, WY, TX, ND, MN, MO, IL, WI, FL, GA, MI, OH, VA, PA, DE, VT, NH, ME)

$123,809 to $322,596 (UT, ID, MT, NM, SD, NE, KS, OK, IA, AR, LA, MS, AL, TN, KY, IN, SC, NC, WV)

The expected base salary for this position will vary depending on a number of factors, including relevant experience, skills and location.

Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions: 

  • Build and manage highly motivated, high-performing software engineering team(s) by hiring strong talent, mentoring, and motivating the staff to support many related business/technology areas, fostering a culture of continuous improvement, innovation, and excellence. Drive budgeting and planning for their area of responsibility.
  • Collaborate with product managers to estimate effort, prioritize the roadmap, plan, and deliver prioritized roadmap items to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Review and translate product requirements into robust designs to ensure high-quality applications that are modular, configurable, maximize reuse, are fast, effective, user-friendly, secure, compliant, scalable, maintainable, and deliver desired outcomes.
  • Lead the team(s) hands-on to deliver new or improved features, addressing any impediments in implementing a high-quality solution that delivers desired outcomes.
  • Collaborate with other teams and stakeholders as necessary to ensure an overall successful delivery of the intended functionality.
  • Review product requirements, design, and code to ensure the best quality and adherence to best practices. Ensure that all application system(s) in their area of responsibility are secure, compliant, performing per expectations, and up to date on the tech stack.
  • Monitor and report on key performance metrics, making data-driven decisions to optimize engineering operations. Identify opportunities for system and process improvements.
  • Drive the implementation of new features, large refactors/migrations, as well as process changes. Leverage CI/CD and process optimization to improve time to market.
  • Stay up to date with the latest industry trends and technologies and drive the adoption of best practices within the team.
  • Assist in developing and driving the technical vision, strategy, and innovation for Mercury’s application systems.
  • Assist in communicating with executive leadership to represent the engineering organization and its vision.

      

 

 

Qualifications

Education: 

Minimum: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems or other related fields Or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred: 

  • Master’s Degree in Computer Science 

Experience:

Minimum:

  •  10+ years of Software engineering experience with 7+ year’s experience, leading and managing staff and 2+ year’s experience managing large teams. 

Preferred:

  • Experience in supporting SaaS systems like Ultipro, Coupa, Concur, ServiceNow, etc.

  • Experience guiding buy-versus-build decisions to determine whether to purchase, customize, or internally develop software system 
  • Experience partnering across enterprise business units to provide best in class tooling, capabilities, and technologies (example: finance, accounting, human capital, etc.)                       

Knowledge and Skills:

Minimum:    

  • Proficient in building and managing multiple small/medium-sized, highly motivated, high-performing software engineering team(s) by hiring strong talent, mentoring, and motivating staff. Proficient in hiring and developing strong next-level managers and leaders.
  • Proficient in project management tasks like estimating, planning, executing, tracking, and reporting progress.
  • Proficient in leading multiple engineering teams to deliver high-quality product solutions per roadmap on different technology stacks like mobile, web, backend, data, etc.
  • Experienced in designing and implementing high-quality, complex, high-volume distributed application systems that are modular, configurable, maximize reuse, are fast, effective, user-friendly, secure, compliant, scalable, and maintainable.
  • Proficient in leveraging technologies like APIs, messaging, data streaming, workflow, integration frameworks, microservices, containers, and cloud computing to implement best-in-class solutions. Maximizing use of open-source libraries where possible.
  • Experienced in leveraging DevSecOps to improve engineering efficiency.
  • Proficient in leveraging analytics data and experimentation to design and implement or improve systems to be fast, scalable, and effective.
  • Experienced in driving transformative initiatives like digital transformation, omni-channel system implementation, legacy system migration, cloud transformation, system optimization & modernization, product & services development, AI/ML adoption.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Excellent ability to collaborate and influence cross-functional teams and stakeholders across multiple areas to address impediments and deliver desired results.
  • Proficient in championing operational excellence and best practices with a focus on quality, performance, scalability, maintainability, and observability.
  • Experienced in driving technical strategy, vision, and innovation for multiple functional/technology areas.                                     

Preferred: 

  • Experience in building software for P&C Insurance Business.
