Overview

Position Summary:

 

The primary job function is to actively assist team members with understanding and demonstrating skills needed to successfully perform their underwriting job duties. This is achieved by using independent judgment and discretion, designing, building, and facilitating an engaging learning and development strategy and program that ensures both new and existing employees in our Underwriting division are trained in a consistent, effective manner and have the skills and knowledge to provide the highest level of insurance expertise to Mercury’s customers.  

 

The UW Training Specialist plays a key role in Mercury’s growth and long-term success by shaping the Underwriting training experience.  The incumbent creates compelling, up-to-date, and state-of-the-art courses and training materials.  The UW Training Specialist conducts live instructor-led courses for new and existing employees in Underwriting and evaluates progress. 

 

 

Geo-Salary Information

State specific pay scales for this role are as follows:

 

$61,864 to $108,197 (CA, NJ, NY, WA, HI, AK, MD, CT, RI, MA)

$56,240 to $98,361 (NV, OR, AZ, CO, WY, TX, ND, MN, MO, IL, WI, FL, GA, MI, OH, VA, PA, DE, VT, NH, ME)

$50,616 to $88,525 (UT, ID, MT, NM, SD, NE, KS, OK, IA, AR, LA, MS, AL, TN, KY, IN, SC, NC, WV)

 

The expected base salary for this position will vary depending on a number of factors, including relevant experience, skills and location.

Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions:

 

  • Prepares and organizes course outlines, materials and teaching aids, and review existing procedures, tools and manuals. Through continued education, keeps abreast of emerging trends in training techniques and new developments and procedures within the complex field of insurance.  Reviews and revises training content to ensure training is current and relevant.  Consults with business leaders and subject matter experts to assess training needs and learning objectives to recommend solutions.  Applies expert level knowledge of adult learning principals and concepts, instructional design theory, learning tools, industry resources, and measurement and evaluation methods.
  • Conducts training classes ranging from one day to several weeks on underwriting philosophy and use of systems. Acts in a leadership role for the duration of the class.  Defines instructional objectives and selects appropriate delivery methods to appeal to all adult learning styles.  Builds interactive learning experiences during the delivery of content using a variety of training methods and reinforcement strategies (e.g. case studies, stories, small group activities).
  • Measures and analyzes trainee progress and performance through direct interaction and audits of work product, and communicates observations to leadership  Acts as an advocate for employees addressing training and informational needs.
  • Develops online training materials, courses, and tools utilizing e-learning and other software programs.  
  • Regular attendance at work on a full-time schedule of at least 8 hours and 40 hours per week

Qualifications

Education:

 

•Worker characteristics are normally acquired through the successful completion of a Bachelor’s degree (B.A., B.S.).

 

Experience:

 

•At least 4 years of underwriting experience or 2 years as a Senior Underwriter, or equivalent combination of education and experience, is desired.

 

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Detailed knowledge of insurance principles, terminology, products and practices.
  • Thorough knowledge of established Company and assigned department policies and procedures.  
  • Familiarity with various training methods including; self-study, group instruction, lecture format, demonstrations, simulation exercises, role-play and computer-based learning.
  • Experience in developing training content and delivering web-based training programs. 
  • Demonstrated facilitation skills in small and large group settings.
  • Energy, imagination and presentation skills to foster employee engagement and learning.  
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and a keen eye for detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects or assignments and work within a given timeline for designed projects or assignments.
  • Excellent organizational skills and initiative to prioritize training needs and curriculum.  
  • Able to instill program objectives, goals and performance standards as well as evaluating the progress and performance of employees.  
  • Able to analyze and interpret course data, feedback and to select and develop the most effective training courses and materials.  
  • Demonstrated analytical skills coupled with a genuine passion for new technologies.
  • Creative and innovative in problem solving and the formulation of solutions.
  • Demonstrated self-starter with ability to work independently. 
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint)
