Position Summary:

The Sr Climate Research Scientist will lead cutting-edge research in climate science, focusing on the development and application of advanced climate models. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of climate dynamics, modeling methodologies, and data analysis, with the ability to interpret complex datasets and provide actionable insights. This role requires significant experience in climate modeling, a strong track record of publishing research, and the ability to collaborate across interdisciplinary teams.

State specific pay scales for this role are as follows:
$105,245 to $199,452 (CA, NJ, NY, WA, HI, AK, MD, CT, RI, MA)
$95, 677 to $181,320 (NV, OR, AZ, CO, WY, TX, ND, MN, MO, IL, WI, FL, GA, MI, OH, VA, PA, DE, VT, NH, ME)
$86,110 to $163, 188  (UT, ID, MT, NM, SD, NE, KS, OK, IA, AR, LA, MS, AL, TN, KY, IN, SC, NC, WV)
The expected base salary for this position will vary depending on a number of factors, including relevant experience, skills and location.

Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions: 

• Lead and conduct high-level climate modeling research to advance understanding of climate systems and their interactions. 

• Develop, implement, and improve climate models to address key research questions related to climate change impacts, adaptation, and mitigation. 

• Analyze and interpret large climate datasets, including satellite and observational data, using statistical and computational techniques. 

• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including policy makers, environmental scientists, and engineers, to ensure research outcomes are relevant and applicable. 

• Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at scientific conferences. 

• Mentor junior scientists and research staff, providing guidance and training on research methods and modeling techniques. 

• Stay current with developments in the field of climate science and modeling methodologies, and contribute to strategic direction of research efforts. 

• Lead or contribute to grant proposals, funding applications, and collaborative research projects.  

 

Qualifications

Education: 

Minimum: 

• Ph.D. in Climate Science, Environmental Science, Atmospheric Science, Earth Systems Science, or a related field. 

 

Experience

Minimum: 

• Minimum of 5 years of professional research experience in climate science or a closely related field, with a focus on climate modeling. 

• Expertise in developing and using climate models, such as general circulation models (GCMs), regional climate models (RCMs), or other earth system models. 

• Strong programming skills in languages such as Python, R, Fortran, or MATLAB. 

• Experience with large-scale data analysis and high-performance computing (HPC). 

• Proficient in using climate simulation tools and statistical methods to analyze complex environmental data. 

• A strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals and experience presenting scientific findings at conferences. 

• Experience with interdisciplinary collaboration and a commitment to producing actionable, real-world solutions.  

Preferred: 

• Familiarity with machine learning techniques for climate data analysis and model development. 

• Experience working with policy makers or stakeholders in the climate change sector. 

• Knowledge of climate change impacts on ecosystems, agriculture, and human health.

• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced research environment. 

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain complex scientific concepts to non-experts. 

 

 

 

 

Pay Range

USD $105,245.00 - USD $199,452.00 /Yr.
